Offers Disaster Download, Others Get Involved
Napster
is now chipping in to the Katrina relief effort with a new
charity download. The digital compilation, called Download to
Donate, will feature tracks from Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong,
Elton John, Sade, and the Neville Brothers. All proceeds will
be given to the American Red Cross, part of a growing number
of private donations flowing into the area. Meanwhile, rival
Apple is also getting involved by allowing easy donations
through the iTunes Music Store. Apple users can select
different donation levels, and simply pay by credit card.
Outside of the digital realm, the music industry is
rushing to get involved. A long list of artists, including
Usher, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, Ludacris and
Alicia Keys, are all going to be part of a benefit concert
scheduled for September 10th. That event will be broadcast on
MTV, VH1 and CMT. Elsewhere, Matt Lauer will host a massive
benefit concert on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC, featuring Louisiana
natives Tim McGraw, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick, Jr.
Others are making direct contributions, including Diddy and
Jay-Z, who collectively wrote a check for $1 million to the
American Red Cross.
